The Kalama Community fair is a member of the Washington State Fair Association. The Fair was originally incorporated in 1965 as a means to recognize the agriculture and the other achievements of the rural families in the community. Today, thanks to generous contributions of the time and money through-out the community, this tradition continues. The Fair Board is always seeking new and interested members of our community to become involved. If you would like to become a part of this enriching experience, please contact any board member for the meeting times and dates.

We are hoping this new addition to our Kalama fair lets people express their talents and interest through designing. We hope that this will be a fun and exciting event that all can enjoy, so with that in mind, we hope to see designers and models working the runway with fun!

1:00 -Western -Create a western style of clothing.
1:45 -Costume -Create and present a high fashion costume.
2:30 -Old to New -Take something old and create a new fashion look.
3:15 -Formal Wear -Create and present a high fashion look.
4:00 -Unique -Create an outfit using only party store supplies.
4:45 -Everyday wear -Create and present an everyday look.
Show times are only a guide line, they may run late depending on amount of entries

Rules

Enter into as many categories and as many projects that you would like.
Sew your own project.
Model your own project or provide your own model, but your project must be modeled.
Dressing rooms will be available but must be shared by taking turns.
There is a $3.00 Gate entry fee to enter the Kalama Fair.
Please come prepared and have models ready to go at show time.
Parking is located across the street from our southwest gate.
Please check-in one hour before your show time and provide names of models.
This is an opportunity to show your modeling talents.

Holiday Bazaar Vendor Information

Dear Vendors

Last year, the 2009 Holiday Bazaar vender spaces sold out. The applications this year(2010 Holiday Bazaar) will be distributed first to those 2009 vendors. Returning vendors have until September 24th, any spaces remaining will be awarded to the earliest completed applications and fees paid. Fair Board member Shelly Hickman(673-2994) will assign spaces.

The Kalama Community Building will be open for vendor set-up at 7 am Saturday morning, November 6th. The Bazaar will be open to the public from 9 am to 4 pm. Please use street parking for unloading only. There will be a designated vendor parking lot and shuttle to and from that lot for your convenience. At the end of the day, please finish your repacking and exit the building by 5 pm.

The Bazaar is held at the community Buiding at 2nd and Elm Streets. All merchants are expected to keep their booth fully open until the 4 o'clock closing time!!!
Please honor this commitment to the Kalama Holiday Bazaar.

Merchants are asked to contribute a merchandise sample for the Kalama Community Fair Raffle. Participation is not mandatory. Participating merchants will recieve a FREE piece of Blue Ribbon home made Pie a la mode and coffee courtesy of the Kalama Fair Association.

No merchants will be allowed to sell fresh baked items or other food, except those permitted from your merchandise list. The Kalama Fair Board will be providing concessions, a bake sale, a fresh Apple Pie sale, and Swedish Pancakes with Lingonberry Butter.

The Kalama River to River Challenge 10K and 5K Run-Walk 2011

The Kalama River to River Challenge is intended to be a family friendly event promoting wellness and fitness for all ages. All levels of fitness are welcome to participate in the beautiful scenic race that fits your fitness level.
This year’s 10K Challenge will begin at the fair grounds traveling around Kress Lake to Kalama River Road, turn west continuing over the I-5 overpass toward the Columbia River, turning north along Steelscape to the Columbia River where it will circle and return toward I-5 turning south on Fishermen’s Loop toward the Kalama River where they will U-turn and head back to the fair grounds over the I-5 overpass finishing at the fairgrounds where hydration and a hearty pancake breakfast will be awaiting you.
This year’s 5k Run-Walk will take you on a scenic walk around Kress Lake and north along a scenic route returning to the fair grounds where hydration and a hearty pancake breakfast will be awaiting you.
10K Awards will be presented during the breakfast at the grandstand. Trophies will be awarded to the 1st Place Overall male and 1st Place Overall female. Medals will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in all age groups. *(NO medal will be awarded to 1st place in the age category of overall winners.) Ribbons will be awarded for 4th-10th place in all age groups. The age groups are U15; 16-20; 21-30; 31-40; 41-50; 51-60; 61-70; 71+. Sponsor prizes will also be given during a drawing following award presentations.

***Use only standard canning jars, sealed with flat metal lids, screw bands removed. All canned and dried food exhibits must be labeled. Label must be placed as near to the bottom front of the jar as possible. Note if citric acid or lemon juice has been added to canned tomatoes. Do not use paraffin on jams or jellies. Jams must be processed according to USDA recommendations and noted on the label. The Ball Canning Book can be consulted for accurate information and will be used by Kalama Fair judges for judging standards. Jams made with low sugar, no sugar or substitute should be properly labeled.

Blue Ribbon Tips! The judge will look for fruit evenly distributed throughout the jar. Liquid should cover contents. Sealed lid should not be rusty. Jar should be clean. Product should be cut into even pieces and should have uniform ripeness with a liquid that is not cloudy. No overripe products should be canned. Processing time & method should be noted on outside of jar.

Blue Ribbon Tips! The judge will be looking for a prepared product with evenly browned tops. Texture is extremely important with the right mixture of moisture and chewiness. Taste should be a good blend of ingredients. Breads should be a nice shape loaf. When yeast bread is cut into, no fragrance of yeast should be detected. Air bubbles should be evenly spaces and without large holes or tunnels. The thickening used in a pie should between runny and too thick. The bottom crust should be lightly browned and not doughy. The sweetness is a personal preference.

How do I Enter a Project?

1. Bring your exhibit or project to the Exhibit Hall at the Kalama fairgrounds, July 20th , from noon- 8pm.
-Or call Shirley Lowman (673-4071) to prearrange a time.
**Animal entries should be received before July 15th!!!

2. Complete an exhibitor entry form and an identification tag with the help of our many volunteers. You will receive your tag, tab receipt in order to pick-up your exhibit after the fair. Exhibits will be color coded based on your age:

7& under- Peewees

8-11- Junior

12-13- Intermediates

14-18- Senior Youth

19-61- Adults

62 & Older- Seniors

3. Fair princesses will place your exhibit into the hall and in the correct exhibit division.

4. Exhibits will be judged in the evening on July 20th, and ribbons will be awarded. The Danish system of judging is used at all Washington State Fair Association fairs.
This means your product will be judged on its own merit and your age category NOT against other exhibits.

5. You can view your exhibit beginning Thursday the 21st at noon, when the Fair opens to the public.

6. You will be able to pick up your exhibit Sunday July 24th from 8 am till Noon. Please bring your tag tab to match to your exhibit. Money earned from your ribbon will be awarded at this time.

Division 1 – Food Preservation
***Use only standard canning jars, sealed with flat metal lids, screw bands removed. All canned and dried food exhibits must be labeled. Label must be placed as near to the bottom front of the jar as possible. Note if citric acid or lemon juice has been added to canned tomatoes. Do not use paraffin on jams or jellies. Jams must be processed according to USDA recommendations and noted on the label. The Ball Canning Book can be consulted for accurate information and will be used by Kalama Fair judges for judging standards. Jams made with low sugar, no sugar or substitute should be properly labeled.

Class 1 – Any Jam, Jelly, Preserve, or Fruit Butter (No freezer jam)
Class 2 – Any Pickle, Pickled Vegetables, or Relish
Class 3 – Any Vegetables
Class 4 – Any Fruit
Class 5 – Tomatoes

Blue Ribbon Tips! The judge will look for fruit evenly distributed throughout the jar. Liquid should cover contents. Sealed lid should not be rusty. Jar should be clean. Product should be cut into even pieces and should have uniform ripeness with a liquid that is not cloudy. No overripe products should be canned. Processing time & method should be noted on outside of jar.

Blue Ribbon Tips! The judge will be looking for a prepared product with evenly browned tops. Texture is extremely important with the right mixture of moisture and chewiness. Taste should be a good blend of ingredients. Breads should be a nice shape loaf. When yeast bread is cut into, no fragrance of yeast should be detected. Air bubbles should be evenly spaces and without large holes or tunnels. The thickening used in a pie should between runny and too thick. The bottom crust should be lightly browned and not doughy. The sweetness is a personal preference.
